German Language Levels & Certifications
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) helps us understand how to learn the German language step by step. It uses easy-follow descriptions to show different skills, like talking, reading, and writing, from beginner to advanced. These skills are grouped into six levels: A1, A2, B1, B, C1, and C2. To understand where you should start, it’s important to know what each level actually covers.
Though Goethe-Institut certifications are the most widely preferred and recognized for Germany-related purposes, there are also other recognized German language examinations such as ÖSD and TELC.
German certification exams are usually conducted offline and consist of four modules:
Listening (Hören), Reading (Lesen), Writing (Schreiben), Speaking (Sprechen).
In most exams, students generally require around 60% marks to pass successfully.
Every learner begins at A1. The final level you need depends on your goal, no shortcuts.
Required German Levels Based on Study & Career Plan
Students planning for Bachelor's
For German-medium bachelor’s programs in public universities, B2 to C1 level German is generally mandatory for admission. Some private universities may accept students with lower levels initially, but students are eventually expected to achieve higher proficiency to manage academics, communication, and career opportunities in Germany.
Students planning for Master's
English-medium master’s programs usually do not require German for admission, but A2–B1 is highly recommended for part-time jobs, internships, and daily life in Germany.
German-medium master’s programs generally require B2–C1 level German for academics, research, and university communication.
Students planning for Ausbildung
Most Ausbildung (vocational training) programs require at least B1 level German, as students must understand theory classes, workplace instructions, and practical training. B2 level is recommended for better communication and higher chances of success.
Students planning for Nursing
Nurses usually require B1 level German to begin the recognition or adaptation process in Germany. However, B2 level is mandatory in most states for obtaining a full nursing license and working professionally in hospitals.

German is not always mandatory for the Opportunity Card, but learning German improves eligibility points, job opportunities, and integration into German society. B1 level or higher is strongly recommended for better career prospects.
